Although lots of people in the Algarve will speak English, the native language is Portuguese.
Because most of the shops and services will be run by people who can speak English, it is not neccessary to be fluent in Portuguese, but it is handy to know a few words and phrases.
If you learn one word though, make it Obrigado (obrigada if you're a woman)... as saying thank you is always very courteous.
